What is EYH?

Expanding Your Horizons™ in Science, Mathematics, and Engineering (EYH) is a career exploration conference for students in grades 6−9. This conference aims to interest young women in scientific/technical careers by providing them with information and experiences related to these careers. It happens at a time when they are making important academic decisions about taking mathematics and science courses in school.

The Latest in Fire Fighting Evening Wear!

Fire Fighting.

Previous Hands-On Workshops from 2006 EYH:

Smart Materials.

Smart Materials at Play
“Smart” materials have the capability to sense changes in their environment and respond to changes in a pre-programmed way. Some have the ability to change shape or size simply by adding a bit of heat, or change to a liquid or solid when near a magnet. Participants had fun with simple and interesting hands-on activities such as levitation of a magnet above a cooled superconductor and other activities. Participants’ curiosity was limited only by their imagination!

Folds, Faults, and Thrusts.

Folds, Faults, and Thrusts, Oh My!
In this workshop, participants learned how the ridges and mountains in Pennsylvania were formed. They used edible models to make their own folds and faults in layers of flour and cocoa, then compared the modeled mountains to the ridges and valleys seen all around central Pennsylvania.

Mutant Worm.

Mutant Glow-in-the-Dark Worms
Students will use several types of microscopes to examine live C. elegans (worms) and play a game involving identification of mutants (long/short, paralyzed, uncoordinated, etc.). We will also examine green fluorescent protein in cells that allows us to examine muscles and other tissues under UV light.

And Many MORE!!!

History and goals of EYH Conference:

EYH is a program model developed by the Math/Science Network in California in 1976. The goals of EYH are to:

  • Increase young women's interest in mathematics, science, and engineering through positive, hands-on experiences.

  • Foster awareness of career opportunities in scientific and technical fields.

  • Provide young women with positive role models who are active in scientific and technical careers.

  • Involve young women who have fewer opportunities to meet successful young women of similar backgrounds or circumstances and have limited access to positive math/science experiences.
Science. The Expanding Your Horizons Network (formerly the Math/Science Network) is a nonprofit organization that has existed for more than thirty years. The network is dedicated to increasing the participation of girls and women in mathematics and science. The network is the originator and co-sponsor of nearly 100 Expanding Your HorizonsTM conferences that take place from coast to coast each year.
