NCAA Frequently Asked Questions

Before an athlete can play a sport or receive an athletic scholarship at a Division I or II college, he/she must meet specific academic criteria by the NCAA for freshman eligibility. Listed below is an overview of the new rules which go into effect for students entering college on or after August 1, 2006.

14 Required Core Courses (16 core courses will be required for students who enter a Division I school August 1, 2008 and after)

  • Four years of English;
  • Two years of mathematics (algebra I or higher level);
  • Two years of natural or physical science (including one year of lab science if offered by your high school);
  • One extra year of English, mathematics or natural/physical science;
  • Two years of social science; and
  • Three years of extra core courses (from any category above, or foreign language, nondoctrinal religion or philosophy).

NOTE: Computer science courses can be used only if your high school grants graduation credit in mathematics or natural/physical science and the courses appear on your high-school’s core-course list as a math or science course.

The range for eligibility begins at a GPA of 3.55 with an SAT score of 400 or an ACT of 37 and then ends with a GPA of 2.0 with an SAT score of 1010 or an ACT of 86. Check the NCAA website or publications for the complete list. The NCAA will not require the SAT?ACT writing component at the present time.

Students can register with the NCAA Clearinghouse following their junior year in high school. Please see your high school guidance counselor or athletic director, or visit the NCAA website for complete eligibility guidelines and information.
