Counselor

Diane Farnsworth

Diane Farnsworth has been working as a counselor with the MRC since 1986. She has come to know many students during this time and continues to value and enjoy the relationship she shares with them. (some who have long graduated continue to send pictures of spouses and children as the years go on). Having been a PSU student herself, Diane sees the value and need to connect with someone at the University who knows you by name, who cares about you as a student and as a person...a person with dreams, hopes, connections with home, struggles and stories to share." Diane also recognizes the value of quickly connecting to others that share a common interest, culture or vision, by way of joining a club or organization. She shares her knowledge of these connections. After all, that's what makes this large institution a "home away from home". Diane also appreciates meeting those students who may have been, or are currently up against, personal and/or academic challenges. "I feel most rewarded when I can help a student solve problems and completely turn a semester around or remedy a previously disastrous semester".

"I want to be an advocate for students in whatever way possible. I am fully aware that some students view Penn State as overwhelming and impersonal. I want to be the staff support who changes that perception."

Diane feels particularly connected to this age group. She and her husband
have three children: two sons (one in college here at PSU and the other in
HS) and a daughter in middle school. She muses "I see the challenges and
distractions this generation faces. My teenagers make me aware every
moment!!" Diane works with students in time management, taking control of
their environment, reducing distractions and a lot more.

Diane also facilitates BOTH (Blends of Traditional Heritages). BOTH is a group for all students who classify themselves as Biracial or Multiracial, but it specifically focuses on the special concerns of students who share a common African/ African American heritage. The group meets Sunday evenings, biweekly, from 7:00PM-8:30PM. It is always open to interested students.  Please contact her for more information:  865-1773.
