CORED's accomplishments include:
In 2002, CORED participated in the review of mid-point progress in implementing A Framework to Foster Diversity at Penn State: 1998-2003, Penn State's diversity strategic plan.
In September 1997, the commission organized and sponsored a national conference entitled, "Best Practices in Diversity: Exploring Practical Applications for the 21st Century." More than 400 representatives from higher education and industry learned that managing diversity means focusing on issues other than race, gender, and sexual orientation.
In March 1997, the commission sponsored a one-day conference entitled, "Diversity... Beyond Awareness and Education," for Penn State faculty, staff, and administrators. The participants had the opportunity to network with one another and discuss multicultural issues at the University. A second similar conference is currently in the planning stages for June 1999.
During fall 1996, the commission initiated a study of the treatment of diversity in the University's curriculum. The resulting reports included the recommendations to add a one-semester experiential course for all students, suggested criteria for adding diversity courses to the list of approved courses, and strong encouragement to the various colleges and departments to emphasize and promote diversity perspectives in the curriculum. In 2001, this study was updated. CORED continues to monitor progress on this issue.
A special subcommittee of the commission conducted an analysis of the University's policies regarding exit interviews for departing minority employees and students. During the spring 1995 semester, the commission forwarded this report to the University's central administration. In 2000, this study was updated with additional feedback provided in spring 2002.
The commission conducts ongoing outreach efforts involving collaboration with local schools and the business community, as well as the non-University Park campuses.
Each fall, the commission participates in a joint retreat with the Commission for Women and the Commission on Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Equity to discuss issues of common concern, develop joint recommendations/strategies for change within Penn State, and to create action plans. The chairs and chairs-elect meet at regular intervals throughout the year.
The Terminology Guidelines, Recommendations by the Commission on Racial/Ethnic Diversity was published in 1991. The commission compiled this information in response to a request by former Penn State President Bryce Jordan for suggestions concerning appropriate terminology to use when referring to various racial/ethnic minorities.
